Forgive the pun, but Trevor Moore’s excellent talk on beekeeping created quite a buzz among our members!
In the three years since he took up the hobby, Trevor has become an expert on keeping bees and about bees themselves. We were treated to a superb explanation of how to make honey, we sampled two different sorts of honey, we handled beeswax and the frames from the hive.
We heard about how queens swarm before going off to create a new hive, which could be anywhere from the intricate wooden hive that Trevor showed to us, to hedges, trees, and even to park benches. We heard how once the queen forms a hive, she never leaves it except to form another colony.
We learned about the different types of bee – the queen, the drones, the workers, and the different roles that they have at various times. We learned about the three different types of products which can be harvested from a beehive: honey, beeswax, royal jelly, and propolis.
And despite Trevor’s detailed presentation, there were still plenty of questions from the floor. A truly great and very interesting presentation. We hope to have Trevor back next year but for the time being, I’m keeping the subject under my hat!
